Since Fall 2016, I have been pursuing landscape photography as a hobby-turned second job. I currently work as an independent contractor for a local landscape company to visit sites post-occupancy, and formally document the works through photography. These pictures are used as marketing and advertising materials, for keeping client files up to date, for reference on any go-backs or follow up work, and to share with clients upon request.
I believe in capturing a place from all angles, while including close-ups and detailed pictures of even the seemingly-inconsequential design element. You never know what you need until something goes wrong and you’re away from the site, so strive to capture everything. If I have learned anything from my experience, it is these three things:
- The more quality photographs a designer or crew has to work with, the better.
- Clients like the photographs to be shared with them; it builds trust and strengthens the relationship with all parties.
- Pay attention to weather and sunlight; the time of day is extremely important to documenting the site in a beautiful way.
