Coal Mining Loop Trail @ Heritage Park | Blacksburg, VA | 2:00 PM (90 Minutes)
This birding trip was the same as the previous week on April 2. We walked the same trail as last time, I thought it would be interesting to see what might be similar or different. [*we walked the same trail, but we doubled back to visit the restrooms on this hike, so we ended up with more mileage+]
Here is what I saw: 1 female ruby kinglet, 1 male red cardinal, 2 blue jays, 1 blue grey gnatcatcher, 1 Carolina chickadee, & 1 mourning dove.
After I gave it some thought, I decided I wanted to be a little more illustrative with my bird watching posts. I will share a picture of each species I positively ID’d as well as a link over to that bird’s fact sheet on The Cornell Lab of Ornithology‘s All About Birds website. I will also reference that species’ conservation status on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Mourning dove | Zenaida macroura | Conservation Status: Least Concern
Blue jay | Cyanocitta cristata | Conservation Status: Least Concern
Carolina Chickadee | Poecile carolinensis | Conservation Status: Least Concern
Blue-grey gnatcatcher | Polioptila caerulea |Conservation Status: Least Concern
